Bukidnon bans ‘texting while driving’

MALAYBALAY CITY – (Bukidnon News Dispatch/25 September) The
Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of Bukidnon has approved an ordinance
prohibiting ‘text messaging’ while driving.

The SP recently passed ordinance no. 2011-036R known as “Text at your
own risk while driving ordinance of 2011.”

Provincial board members unanimously approved the motion of first
district board member Jay Albarece. Nemesio Beltran Jr., second
district board member introduced the ordinance.

The ordinance prohibited any motorist driving a vehicle in any street,
road or thoroughfare within the territorial boundaries of the province
of Bukidnon from text messaging and making or receiving calls while

Volunteers back PLS Sawaga clean-up drive

MALAYBALAY CITY- The Philippine Life Saving (PLS) Bukidnon Chapter spearheaded a clean-up drive in a portion of the city’s Sawaga River in celebration of the International Coastal Clean-up Day on September 18.

About 147 volunteers cleaned the stretch of the river from Sumpong to Impalambong Bridge covering five barangays, namely; Barangays 3, 4, 7, 10, and 11.

Volunteers were able to collect around 30 sacks of non-biodegradable garbage, according to John Valmores, PLS assistant secretary. The group also cleared tall grasses along the river, particularly at the Impalambong bridge.    Continue reading

Malaybalay in 2011-2020: Portrait of the growing “city within a forest”

MALAYBALAY CITY – (Bukidnon News Dispatch/08 Sept.) Two of Malaybalay’s five urbanizing barangays in 2000 will now be considered “urban areas,” according to the draft of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) of the city for 2011 to 2020. But one barangay identified as “urbanizing” 10 years ago, will be categorized again as a “rural barangay,” according to the list obtained by Bukidnon News from the City Planning and Development Office this week.

According to the list of the proposed new roles of the city’s 46 barangays, barangays Sumpong and Casisang are now considered “urban barangays.” Continue reading
