Bukidnon eyes ‘Minahan ng Bayan’ in Libona illegal gold mine area

Government has urged the groups of small scale miners in Sitio
Manlahuyan, Gango, Libona, Bukidnon to produce the requirements for
the declaration of about 58 hectares in the area as “Minahan ng

[Updated] Impasugong proposed as Bukidnon’s tribal capital

MALAYBALAY CITY (Bukidnon News Dispatch/25 September) – Impasugong, Bukidnon’s
134-year old town has been proposed to be declared as the tribal
capital of the province.

Provincial Board member Nemesio Beltran Jr. said the proposal is now
in the hands of four committees of the board.

Established in 1877, Impasugong has been able to preserve its cultural
heritage and ethnic identity, Beltran added.

According to Mindanao historian Rudy B. Rodil, Impasugong is one of
only four Bukidnon towns where the majority of the inhabitants are
Lumads or indigenous peoples. Seven other towns in Mindanao are also

Foreigners behind Libona illegal gold mining; use cyanide, mercury – BENRO chief

MALAYBALAY CITY – (Bukidnon News Dispatch/15 Sept.) Operators of small scale gold mining in at least 58 hectares in Sitio Manlahuyan, Gango, Libona, Bukidnon are financed by foreigners, are illegal, and are using mercury and cyanide , Samuel Cadavos, chief of the Bukidnon Environment and Natural Resources Office (BENRO) said in his report to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, where he brought attention to a complex “social, technical environmental, and political” problem it has become. San Fernando illegal gold mining ordered stop – MGB official

MALAYBALAY CITY (1 September) – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Northern Mindanao 10 (DENR-10) has ordered a stop of the illegal small scale gold mining operations in Dao, San Fernando, Bukidnon

Rodante Felina, officer in charge of the MGB mine management division, said the MGB regional director, Alfredo Relampagos, signed the order and issued it in early August. He said the MGB has officially requested San Fernando Mayor Laurencia Edma to implement the order.

Felina, who briefed members of the Bukidnon Sangguniang Panlalawigan Wednesday on the MGB’s environmental and social framework of mining, said the order was addressed to all illegal small scale gold miners in the area “to stop their illegal activities within the exploration permit area of San Christo Mineral Exploration Corporation.”

But Felina admitted they have no update on the implementation of the order. Continue reading
