SPORTS: Malaybalay Frisbee teams prevail in national competition

MALAYBALAY CITY (Bukidnon News/16 February) Malaybalay teams showcased good talents, team spirit and warm hospitality during the recent 4th Love Ultimate Frisbee Tournament held in Malaybalay City last February 4-5.

The tournament themed Kabayaan Ko Ikaw (‘I love you’ in Binukid) kicked off the love month. Organized by the Malaybalay Ultimate Frisbee Association (MUFA), it is the first national ultimate tournament held in the city and in Bukidnon.

It was joined by 21 teams from all over the country divided into three brackets [A, B and C], according to Ma. Grace Jonah Ronolo, President of MUFA. Two of 21 teams are Malaybalay teams: Lungsod ng Malaybalay Disciples (LUMAD) and Malaybalay Ultimate Team (MaUT).

Team MaUT which was formed on May 7, 2009 and started with 15 members, won the championship against Chilli Infernos (Iloilo City) with 15-5 in bracket C.

Also champions in their respective brackets were Chicago Bulls (merge of players from Team Pilipinas, Manila and Cebu) in bracket A, and Impulse United (Cebu City) in bracket B.

MaUT player Kryss ‘Kikai’ Pablo was awarded most valuable female player in bracket C. And fellow teammates Junecca Hugo and Kidd Melendez were Mythical Seven awardees.

Special awards such as most valuable players (MVPs) male and female, Mythical Seven, and Most Spirited Team were given for each bracket, according to the MUFA awards committee. MVPs and the mythical seven were given those who showed superb skills in their performances during the games, based on frequency of their scores, assists and blocks, the committee added.

Team LUMAD, which celebrated their first anniversary during day two of the event, received the Most Spirited Team award of bracket C. Other awardees of same title were Katipuneros/KKK (merge players from manila, Boracay, Cebu and Dumaguete) in bracket A, and Angel Bats (General Santos City) in bracket B. The Most Spirited Team, traditionally given every ultimate tournament, is awarded to team with exceptional teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Love Ultimate Tournaments are held every February said the event organizers. The 1st Love Ultimate was in Iligan City in 2009. The second also in Iligan (2010) and the third was held in Cagayan de Oro City (2011). The 5th will be next year in Dipolog City as decided with captains of teams that participated in 4th Love Ultimate. (Bukidnon News)
