Newborn screening meet held in Maramag

DOLOGON, Maramag, Bukidnon (Bukidnon News/9 Nov 2011) – Health personnel and elected officials from different parts of Bukidnon gathered at a
seminar on newborn screening in MGM Resort, Maramag, Bukidnon on
November 8-9.

The activity dubbed as “Newborn Screening LGU Assembly” drew around
103 participants which include health workers, nurses, doctors, youth
volunteers and LGUs. It was organized by the Department of Health –
Cagayan de Oro City.

According to the Department of Health website (www.doh.gov.ph),
newborn screening (NBS) is a simple procedure to detect congenital
metabolic disorder or inherited diseases which if left untreated could
cause mental retardation and even death.

The activity included lectures and presentations on Newborn
Screening in the Philippines, The Role of the LGUs in Newborn
Screening Implementation, Financing the Newborn Screening
Implementation, Knowing about Newborn Screening Center – Mindanao,
Managing Newborn Screening Implementation in the Rural Health Units
(RHU) Level and Implementing Newborn Screening at the Barangay Level.

Provo Antipasado, Bukidnon provincial administrator, was the guest speaker.

Ms. Gilda Ajoc, one of the event coordinators, said the seminar
aims to enlighten municipalities in Bukidnon on the importance of
Newborn Screening and to encourage more health personnel and LGUs to
participate in the implementation of the program in their respective
levels.

Based on the DOH site, NBS employs the heel prick method in which a
few drops of blood are taken from the baby’s heel and blotted on a
special absorbent filter card. The blood is dried for 4 hours and sent
to the Newborn Screening Laboratory (NBS Lab). The test costs Php 550
and is available in hospitals and health centers in the country.
