Fr. Nery Satur Memorial Run set on October 1

MALAYBALAY CITY – (Bukidnon News Dispatch/27 Sept) The Diocese of
Malaybalay and its media and environment apostolates along with a
sports gear partner will be holding a five-kilometer fun run in memory
of slain priest Fr. Nery Satur in this city on October 1, Saturday.

Run Briefer

Dubbed as the Fr. Nery Satur Memorial Run, the event aims to honor
Satur who lost his life in fighting for the environment two decades
ago.
On Oct. 14, 1991, three men, allegedly hired by the illegal loggers he
angered, killed the 29-year-old Satur. His head was smashed by a
rifle’s butt. Later, he was shot pointblank with a shotgun.

Fr. Nery’s martyrdom came during an era of logging concessionaires in Bukidnon. The young priest from Pangantucan was among the clergy’s youngest.

In September 1990, Fr. Nery, upon request of then Bishop Rosales, was
listed as No. 13 of the 45 members of the Bukidnon clergy who were
deputized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as
forest officers.
As forest officers, they were authorized to detect, investigate
violations of forestry laws and regulations administered by the DENR
and to arrest even without warrant any person who has committed, is
committing, or is about to commit in their presence any of the
defenses defined by laws. They were also authorized to seize or
confiscate tools and equipment used in the offense and the forest
products cut, gathered or remove by the offenders.

A DENR Bukidnon report in 1991 showed Fr. Nery facilitated the
confiscation of a total of 7,000 board feet of lumber and flitches all
from Valencia City.

Bukidnon remembers the slain priest in his 20th death anniversary on
October 14.

The run is sponsored by the Diocese of Malaybalay and co-sponsored by

Adventure Center.
