Malaybalay, Lanao del Norte link up in “Sports for Peace”

MALAYBALAY CITY—Governor Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo, in an effort to also promote the tourism of his province as well as strengthen ties with other local government units, sent Malaybalay City’s Mayor Ignacio W. Zubiri an open invitation to the vibrant “Sports for Peace” in Lanao del Norte. Mayor Zubiri, together with about 60 Malaybalay City government employees, accepted the invite and graced the said event last September 2-4 at the cavernous Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) in Sagadan, Tubod, Lanao del Norte. The team from Malaybalay, headed by Councilor Tita Perla Rubio, left the city around 4am on Friday.  They were welcomed with a motorcade upon entering the municipality of Mocas and later met Lanao del Norte provincial employees according to Adelyn Labrador, Malaybalay City participant. She added that Zubiri arrived later in the evening.

Games played were basketball (men), volleyball (men n women), lawn tennis (men n women), badminton (men and women), table tennis (men and women), and Larong Pinoy—tug-of-war, sack race.

During the welcome dinner, Dimaporo mentioned that he wanted to change the mentality about Lanao del Norte, for many have perceived it as a chaotic place. Dimaporo invited Zubiri and the city employees for them to witness that Lanao is truly a peaceful and progressive place, so that the word may also be spread.

“As a whole tsada (beautiful)…the friendship between participants from Malaybalay and Lanao were developed during the games, and we saw firsthand that Lanao del Norte is peaceful, secured,” said Labrador.

Rubio, who played table tennis and lawn tennis, mentioned that in return, the Malaybalay City government invited the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte for a continuation of the Goodwill games to be held sometime in October. (Hazel A. Generalao)
